Where heritage meets hustle

Michael J. Peterson is the founder of Heritage & Hustle Foundation. A first generation American, his early life shaped a lasting belief that a person's starting point should never determine the height to which they can grow.

Above all, Michael is a multidisciplinary artist, storyteller, and choreographer whose work explores identity, resilience, and transformation through spoken word and movement. His creative journey began with violin before he found his voice in choir and musical theater. As dance captain of the renowned Westlake High School show choir, he learned to blend movement and vocal performance in ways that shaped his lifelong artistic path, and that passion earned him a full scholarship to the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles, where he trained under world class mentors who instilled discipline, craft, and the power of art to heal and connect. After only one year of formal dance training there, he was accepted into the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater school, a rare leap that reflects both his capacity and his drive.

His professional career has spanned stage, screen, and international performance, with credits on Glee, The Middle, and Mobbed, collaborations with Zumba creator Beto on commercial and video game projects, and tours through Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, and London. Those experiences deepened his understanding of art as a universal language.

In Seattle, Michael continues to shape stories through movement and poetry. He recently choreographed for Ase Theatre's Dispersed: The Womxn of Region Six at LANGSTON, Seattle's hub for Black arts and culture, and in 2025 he was awarded a Washington Artist Trust GAP grant. He is also a graduate of the Cultural & Holistic Empowerment Experience (CHEE) cohort.

Beyond the stage, his path has crossed nonprofit leadership, operations, finance, real estate, and business consulting. Today he serves as Director of Operations at LANGSTON, and has previously held roles as Director of Operations and Finance for the Cultural Space Agency and West Coast Director for Let Me Run. He holds a Strategy & Execution certification from Harvard Business School, and is a licensed Washington State real estate broker and a licensed notary, credentials that reflect his capacity to build and manage the systems organizations depend on. Across each chapter, Michael has remained committed to service and to building systems that help artists and organizations become more sustainable.

Through that work, he repeatedly saw talented BIPOC artists, entrepreneurs, and community rooted leaders struggle, not for lack of vision or drive, but for lack of access to business tools, systems, coaching, and technical infrastructure.

Heritage & Hustle Foundation was born from that gap, and from Michael's conviction that education can live and thrive outside the walls of any single institution. That belief, that learning belongs in studios, workspaces, and communities as much as in classrooms, helped birth Heritage & Hustle. He founded it to help people turn vision into sustainable practice, business, and community impact, rooted in the belief that legacy and execution must move together.
